Toronto city workers failed to reach a new contract agreement with the city of Toronto by this morning's deadline. So as of just after midnight last night, the garbage collectors are on strike.

You got that? A garbage strike started just after midnight last night. Less than 24 hours ago.

Today there are two parks in the downtown area where people are reporting that somebody has dumped bags of garbage.

What the fuck is WRONG with people?

Eh, that may have less to do with the garbage strike than you'd think. People just suck in general. There's an older lady at the end of my street whom I'll see take garbage out of her house, walk across to the tiny green space, and throw it there.

yeah. i agree with[livejournal.com profile] panic_girl, people just suck in general. in my building people are always throwing bags of garbage off their balconies into the greenbelt (or just the back lawn) rather than walking it to the chute. it's dangerous to walk the dogs out there sometimes! i've nearly been hit by all sorts of garbage. grr.

I can attest to that. Behind my building is a kind of rock garden area - it gets shittier and shittier throughout the year as people toss butts and random bits of garbage off their balconies. Very sad. It just got cleaned / weeded and already it's becoming ugly. You think people would respect it, it's a decent building and we all pay for that area.. sigh.

Maybe people think they're being smart by dumping in public areas.. already. Sheesh. Why ruin the parks prematurely?

My old building was like that. I was often hit by garbage people were tossing off the balcony. Sometimes it was small, a few times it was large boxes. Once someone's cigarette butt came down and burned the dog. All that and we only took him for a fast 5 minute morning pee back there!!

Normal people or city employees that shit is just wrong.

However, I have to say I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to have been perpetrated by our blue collars. I've seen similar stuff happen in Montreal from employees on strike, or about to go on strike.

As an example, 2 years ago, a week before the mass transit people started their strike, there was a full day where the subway would stop for over 5 minutes at every single station, with no warnings whatsoever.

Retards will be retards.

Our binmen were on strike for over 2 weeks (the recycling was picked up since a different company collected that) earlier (end of May/2nd week of June).

But, they only refused to pick up on Mondays and Fridays (long weekends anyone?), so some sections of the city saw no difference whilst other sections (like where I live) had no pick-up due to our day was a Monday. I know it's a hard job, but still...

The other day, J and I drove by a grassy spot in front of a store where a bunch of adult chavs were lounging and drinking beer. One of them tossed the empty behind him as we drove by. I hate littering!

They're jerks?

Actually, my binman is a jerk too.

Would it really have been _that_ much harder for them to take it to 34 St. Patrick St or 100 Queen Street West, depending on their view of recent events?

Given my experience with my union, I'm willing to bet some jerk union workers planned this well ahead of time to 'help' make their point.

Given my experience in a union I would also lay money on the fact that the union started dumping the garbage to make a point. Same way 7 stations are supposed to be 'open' but they're picketing there and not letting anyone through with their trash. Bay was backed up to insanity because they were picketing the entrance to the underground parking at city hall and only letting 1 car in every 10 minutes. Most of those people have nothing to do with the strike, they work within the area or needed to park to get to court but the union didn't care. They want to wreak as much havoc as possible to try to get their way. This shit is going to get ugly. Uglier at any rate.
