restaurants and pubs and bars, oh my!
Sep. 13th, 2009 02:31 pmSomebody suggested I start keeping an inventory of places I can eat. I think this is a really good idea because it will hopefully eliminate some of the flailing around the "Where do you want to go?" conversation that so frequently happens regarding dinner.
Calico Cafe is a tiny hole-in-the-wall place right at the top of my street. When I say small I mean it, they typically have two appetizers, two mains, a soup and two deserts and they change the menu completely every couple of weeks. Everything is vegan and gluten-free, they have their own garden for greens and from some of their facebook posts it looks like the owners all cycle to work. Axel and I stopped by once to grab me a take-out dinner and I had one of the appetizers and he had a desert while we waited. I was really impressed. I didn't see any sign of a liquor license, but I hope that's in the plans because the food was seriously delicious. And they do brunch.
Ciro's has a number of stir fries and thai style dishes that they will make with tofu instead of meat. Plus 150 different kinds of beer!
Fresh is all-vegetarian rice and noodle bowls that are really really good. They have smoothies too, although I haven't tried them yet. It's also right across the street from
bcholmes's place.
Fressen is German for "to graze". All vegan tapas menu. Awesome food. A little pricey so it's more of a special occasion place. Ideally you go with a bunch of friends and order one of everything on the menu for sharing.
bcholmes,
the_axel and I used to get pizza from Magic Oven all the time. They have a spelt crust option and non-dairy cheese substitute. Recently we stopped ordering from them because the one in the west end I thought was really starting to cheap out on the quality of the toppings, and their pizzas are three times the price of the big chain version. I got the chance to eat in at the one out in the east end this weekend and I thought it was much better so that's a possible option when I'm on the wrong side of town.
Another place across the street from
bcholmes, Magic Thai manages to have really good food, really cheap, really fast. Usually thai currys are a soup with a few mushrooms and the odd piece of chicken floating it, MT's currys are a heaping mound of vegetables. The restaurant has kind of a cafeteria feel to it, but they do really fast delivery. I once got a dish with chicken when I had ordered tofu, but it seems to have been a one-off mistake.
Mitzi's Sister has a tofu scramble burrito that I can have when people want to go out for breakfast and they will happily sub salsa for the sour cream and cheese.
Rancho Relaxo does California-Mexican. I ended up there with Tamara on Friday and found out they have a small vegan selection on their menu. They also do soy cheese and sour cream so a lot of the technically non-vegan selections can be converted. And local micro brews. Plus punk rock upstairs.
Sneaky Dee's makes all their tex-mex with the option of chicken, beef or vegetables. And the servings are huge. I split the vegan nachos with Erika last time and between the two of us we still couldn't finish them.
Pretty much any Ethiopian and Indian (especially southern) are also good bets.

Date: 2009-10-05 03:17 am (UTC)Every single pasta has meat in it, and most have cheese. There was only one pizza that didn't have cheese. And they put a bread basket on the table that was just regular bread.

Date: 2009-10-05 03:45 am (UTC)BTW, I found gluten-free white, triple corn and nut and fruit bread recipes in one of my cookbooks today. I'll try to remember to send them to you this week.
