Right then. I have dipped my toe into the crowded-shopping-mall-on-Xmas-eve experience that is Facebook. Ermph.

In a vague - and quite possibly futile - attempt to make it slightly more readable, is there any way to turn off those posts that come from games and apps?

Sadly, it seems not en mass. You can only turn them off by app. But doing it once per isn't too horrible.

I find that turning them off individually gives me a nice sense of achievement! And once you've got the most prolific the new ones come at just a trickle.

Yes.

Hover over the top right corner of a post, and a little arrow appears. click it, and the 2nd link will say "Hide GoombaFarm," or whatever. Click this link. No more from that app.

The annoying part is that people keep coming up with new apps, so you have to keep doing it.

The non-annoying part is that when you have FaceBook friends who post nothing but apps, hiding the damned things makes them go away.

On the other hand, I like doing it individually because a few things that I find useful are actually apps, so I can choose not to hide those ones, but still hide all the, "Soandso has earned a GOLD CHICKEN!" ones.

Sure, it's not for everyone. I avoid all apps, even the more benign-seeming ones, because it appears that all of them are able to access my FB friends' information through me. If there were a good way to block that, I'd reconsider.

I know one friend who has a blanket policy - post an app, get de-friended. OK it's a little draconian, but it keeps him from being annoyed.

Yes! There are two ways. You can "hide" each application as it pops up (tedious), or if you use Firefox, you can install this Greasemonkey script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/44459) which removes pretty much everything. It has a few whitelisted that you may not want - read the information on the script. If ever you start seeing apps & quizzes pop up again, check for a code update.

Hover your mouse on the right side next to a post and a little blurb will appear saying "Hide person or Hide *insert particular app or game*". Click on it and you can hide it and also unhide it whenever you want.

"Hover over the application story in your News Feed and click the "Hide" button. Selecting the name of the application from the drop-down menu will prevent all stories from that particular application from appearing on your home page. Remember that selecting the name of a person from this menu will hide all stories from that person."

You could hide app by app or you could read status updates only, which is what I tend to do. There's a link for that in the main page.

Srsly, all my elderly aunts are all Farmville and Smile-tastic. Kind of amusing actually.

Bwahahaaaa ... Just for that, I've gone searching for you on FB and sent you a friend invite. I promise, however, that you won't see any Mafia Wars or Smile-tastic crap from me.
