living on the big island
Apr. 24th, 2013 10:55 amI had to miss yoga last week because we had a massive pressure front that caused a vertigo storm. Boo. But I got to go last night so yay. My class has quadrupled in size since I was there last. (That means there were four of us.)
The physiotherapist spent some time digging around my sciatic nerve which turns out to be a rather unpleasant experience. Apparently there is a cluster of muscle bundles that run very close to the nerve where it travels between the hip and the leg and in my case the nerve actually runs between a bunch of them. So any time I have muscle tightness there it impinges on the nerve and I get sciatica symptoms. Muscles being what they are, exercise will make it worse and then will make it better. I was stiff as hell this morning from yesterday's yoga so today I have pins-and-needles all down my leg. He gave me some stretches and I plan to do them once I get to a place where I can lie on the floor without causing talk, because repeatedly thwapping my sleeping foot against the base of my desk just isn't cutting it.
He also said he may be able to give me some exercises that may help "desensitize" the middle ear and reduce the vertigo but he wants to do a bit more research on them first. I really like this guy.
So you know, slow progress is slow, but at least slow progress is progress. I told them I wanted to build a recovery program that wasn't "start to get better, get over-confident, do something stupid, go sproing, start all over again at the beginning." Not get super depressed and have to go on SSRIs that make me fall down and hide in my house for a year and a half is also a part of the plan, but I don't think I need to involve them in that part.
I'm really hoping the vertigo gets to be controlled enough that I can actually ride my bicycle this summer. That would make me very happy.
