How the hell is it already June and I've read less than 20 books?
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry
Wind, Sand, and Stars by Antoine de Saint Exupéry
A friend gave me a copy of Wind, Sand, and Stars recently and Darrell had a copy of The Little Prince so it made sense to me to read them together. They are related stories, the narrater of the The Little Prince is a pilot who meets the title character after crashing in the Sahara, something that actually happened to the author. Wind, Sand, and Stars is an autobiographical book that includes the story of that crash and other incidents that happened during his career as a pilot.
In some ways the book reminds me of reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. There is as much philosophy and musing on the human condition as there is relating events.

The Alpha's Concubine by Claudia King So remember how I said that Bookbub had a category called "Dark Romance"? I think I said something along the lines of, "What I expected was stories about banging werewolves, what I got was your pretty standard kidnap fantasies." Guess what showed up on my freebies list the same week? This really reminds me of The Clan of the Cave Bear only with shape-shifters. And the writing wasn't even terrible. |

Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon This is one of those books that gets touted as a work of creative genius and I just cannot figure out why. I think it's an early example of a genre that can best be described as "gritty" because every single character is unpleasant, especially the protagonists. Boring, meandering and verbose. I quit after 50 pages. |

Shout Out Anthology by TO Comix The call for submissions to this latest anthology specifically asked for queer creators of stories for young queer readers. The result is just gorgeous. I definitely have my favourites. There are types of art and stories I don't care for, (I'm not a big fan of the anime style for example) but there is so much variety here there is plenty that I do love. Every collection TO Comix puts out just gets better. |
