All those old WIPs I talked about? Were in Scrivener. So I copied them all over in text files, and moved them onto my laptop. Scrivener doesn't run on Unix, but there is another very similar application called Manuskript that does.

Then my computer ran a patch last night and now Manuskript won't open.

Right. Notepad it is.

(I expect Manskript will catch up in a couple of days, but I want my brain candy fantasy now.)

Days 23-25 have been about doing weekly posting, finding some finishing spots for outstanding assignments and getting them posted by deadline, and writing up a gift for someone after the idea mostly sprung into my head in looking at their requests. Brain, we love when you do this, but could you also turn your attention to other things this way?

Agh, file stress. I'm working in Google Docs now, with backups on my desktop and on a portable drive. It works. Just have to deal with making sure they're all updated with the most current files.

I'm planning since forever to move to Linux (not sure if Ubuntu, though, depends on one photo organising softwareI want to use) but kind of never really got around to it. Scrivener is a major issue, too, so I'm very interested in your experience with alternatives. I once looked for any and found a few, without checking them out futher; I also don't remember if the one that sounded most suitable for my needs is Manuskript or something else - my memory for names really is ghastly. /o\ But if it might not open after a patch for a few days could be a deal-breaker for me - not being able to access my complicated and convoluted layers of chapter and note docs at times when I need it the most (as with my luck, this would happen only at such times ;o) ) would be a minor or major catastrophe. I didn't think of that before, so it's good to know about that when deciding what I'm going to use, or how to set up my file systems for emergencies.
I've been thinking of that with your mentioning of copying your WIPs out of Scrivener. I'm not sure, but you can open rtf files also in Linux, with libre or open office, can you? In that case one only needs to open them all (not an option for the number of mine, I have so many Scrivener projects and so many files in each of them /o\ ), but I'm thinking of giving every story file an unique "code name" which I then can list in a separate text file, and then find the document by using the search function. This works under Windwos, but I also don't remember if you can use the global search in linux to find terms inside files. (I hope I explained that well enough to make any sense).
Do you happen to know how Manuskript is storing the files/content, and if it might be possible to access the single files even if the prog won't open like for you right now? I remember reading the intention behind Scrivener's usage of the rtf format was to allow access even when the prog isn't available or doesn't work.

Very undertandably! *hugs* I really hope Manuskript will soon work for you again. I love the term brain candy very much, too. I've used drawer fic so far which I also got from a WED member in the pat, but brain candy fits much better in some cases, so thank you for that!
