I was thinking about this the other day when I was feeling all full of piss and vinegar. Would you rather die when you are old and contented, and can look back on your life with all your sucesses and failures? Or while you are still young and in the prime of your strength and virility.

I figure the ones who are older are more likely to go to Heaven. More likely to have figured out what it takes for them to be a Good Person. Likely have placed themselves in a position where it is easier for them to be an Honest Person.

But those who die in battle - they go to Valhalla.

That bug I choked on last week laid eggs or something, as there are a couple of extrememly painful golfball sized objects lodged under each ear. And judging by the sensation they are burrowing out through the inside of my throat.

This pisses me off because I was feeling crap last week and thought I had gotten entirely better. Nope, it's back and it brought friends.

So going home after work and straight to bed. Fortunately work will pay for a cab home, and I don't have to get up tomorrow so I'll be able to stay under the covers and sweat this off.

Now if I could just stop hallucinating all would be well.

On the serious side.

My one and only comment about Condoleezza Rice and her ilk is to point you at this.

Pretty much says it all afaiac.

And on the not-at-all serious side.

Condi just needs to get laid. That photo proves it.

Though I'd rather draw point in a Fallujah ghetto than that duty.

Do you remember back in the early days of feminism, when people actually claimed that a world run by women would have fewer wars and social injustice because we're all maternal 'n' shit?

Didn't Maggie Thatcher drive an iron stake through that idea?

However silly that idea might be...

Presumably the few women who have made it in the world of (mostly male) politics did it by being even more corrupt/selfish/pigheaded than men, because that's what it takes to succeed, and if you're female, it usually takes being more of whatever is valued than it would for a male.

I have heard that theory.

And to be honest I find it a huge cop-out. "Our people are never assholes. Except when we are. And then it's because their side forces us to be."

Um. No. If peer pressure is not an allowable defense for frat boys bent on gang-rape, then it sure as fuck isn't an allowable defense for government bodies bent on colonization.

Nah, it's not that women are any more influencable than anyone else...it's that the most conniving/selfish/assholeish/whatever women tend to be the ones who succeed in politics, given that the range selected is even narrower than for men. Women who are going to give a shit about non-Americans and less powerful Americans have an even smaller shot of making it than those who don't, or than men who do, because that's the way the system works, especially under the current regime. So we have a few visible and horrid women involved in running things.

Arguably, if the US were run by "typical" American women, the government might be a saner place. (Arguably, if the US were run by "typical" American men rather than those who end up succeeding in politics, it might also be a little bit saner. Though in fact, there are some members of both sexes in fairly high levels of government who do seem to have both brains and strong senses of public service and obligation...they just don't make it to the level of President very often. Since the President fills the cabinet with his friends, this means that the cabinet also tends to be full of bullies).

I hope not! There are lymph nodes at the sides of your neck (under your ears) as well as at the front - I get them swelling up as well as the front ones when I've got tonsillitis or something. Hope you feel better soon.

Get thee to a doctor. Swollen lymph nodes could be anything from tonsils acting up to mono (which seems to be making the rounds among the adults I know this winter).

Haven't looked into it very closely, but based on superficial descriptions, Valhalla sounds like the boringest and least pleasant place to spend eternity I can think of. Give me a cloud and a harp any day.

Drinking, fucking and fighting[1] is pretty much how I spend every Saturday, so it has the charm of familiarity.
