musing about VD

I had this conversation with
the_axel about Valentine's Day. Because I really don't do Valentine's Day at all. I don't care if other people do it and like it, I'm happy if something makes my friends happy. But it just doesn't interest me.
When I lived with the wife-beater, he was huge on the romantic gestures. Valentine's Day, Christmas, birthdays, Flag Day, the first full moon after the third Thursday of every second month - all occasions for flowers, useless gifts[1] and gawdaful off-key serenades in the middle of the damn street.[2]
It's not that I particularily associate Hallmark Day with the wife-beather. It's just that the irony of receiving all these romantic gestures from somebody who treated me like a punching bag the rest of the time wasn't totally lost on me.
So now I just... don't care.
[1]A useful gift would have been food.
[2]I coulda' died.

Date: 2007-02-15 09:39 pm (UTC)Never got it myself. I prefer love gestures that are random, like he (or she) was just thinking about me. I really hate it when someone only gives gifts after a fight or something. Gifts on holidays are just something your expected to feel obligated to do, making it less special than it's supposed to be. I agree, useful gifts kick ass!

Date: 2007-02-16 07:42 am (UTC)I didn't need yesterday to be a holiday in order to fully enjoy a milestone in my mental health. However, since it was a holiday, I got to celebrate with a party complete with pretty place setting and delicious food (I swear I'm only staying in church for the food ;)
I've had a huge hate-on for holidays for many years. Just wanted to offer a slightly different perspective because it's one I never considered during those year, so now it seems interesting.
Or maybe I'm just feeling fluffy because I just finished crocheting a baby pink scarf with the softest yarn I've ever come across. That MUST be it ;)

Date: 2007-02-16 07:50 am (UTC)I thank all that is good and pure in the universe that Chris was never actually my boyfriend and that I said no to him every time he begged me to let him move in with me. I can only imagine what you went through, but I empathize.
So glad we're both in better places now :)
