The majority of the people who responded to my informal poll prefer third person to first. I also prefer third person. Only this bloody story refused to be written in third person, and now it's violently resisting my attempts to convert it.

I give up. It obviously has a mind of it's own.

I theorize that Skunk wants to use her own words the better to try and convince people she has complete control over the situation. (Spoiler. She does not have complete control over the situation.)

I actually went to a club on the weekend for the first time in - well, years. It was fun. Good music, good crowd. Shit alcohol for way too much money. I knew barely anybody there which kind of drove home just how long it's been.

I have had this earworm for over a week. To the point where it has actually started showing as background music in my dreams.

I'm inflicting it on y'all to try and get it out of my damn head.

What do you prefer when reading fiction, first person or third person? Or does it depend?
the_siobhan: (book skeleton)
I have been doing a lot of writing lately. It's all self-indulgent and terrible, but the point is to make it a regular activity again and that part has been pretty successful.

I'm seriously considering doing NaNoWriMo again. Maybe I'll start working on the second draft of that stupid book I haven't touched in however many years it's been.

15500 of 80000

So that's not so bad.

If I can keep it to 80,000 words, that is. The way this thing is growing I may have to split it up into multiple books.

(Oh my God, I'm turning into Robert Jordan.)
the_siobhan: (This is my boomstick)
Sooooooooo you know that NaNoWriMo project I was talking about doing in the summer?

I may have signed up on the NaNoWriMo Summer Camp site.

I'm always shocked when I drink that much liquor and wake up without a hangover. The fact that I got up at noon probably didn't hurt.

Last night's story was inspired by Life on Mars, Dr Who and a recurring nightmare that lasted for about 20 years where I would wake up in my parents' house and discover that I was actually still 13 and had to go through all that bullshit all over again.

I'm trying to start my NaNoWriMo project now, but of course now I'm getting blocked. Bollocks. Probably because I'm not drunk. Just figures my muse would be Irish too.

Oh yeah, and speaking of Celts... Happy New Year.

Huh. I just got an email about Nanowrimo.

Pending any massive renovation projects on the go, I might just give it another go. (I've signed up for it before but I always end up running out of steam about a week in. The only time I've ever managed to crank a decent number of words out was when I did [livejournal.com profile] crazy_boat.)
the_siobhan: It means, "to rot" (Default)
Who else is doing Nanowrimo this year?

([livejournal.com profile] firecat, [livejournal.com profile] hobbitbabe and [livejournal.com profile] serenejournal, I've already added you to my buddy list.)

My spam intake has exploded this week. For some reason this week's fashion is cartoons. Most of them badly drawn Simpsons rip-offs in pornographic poses. Ew.

I went through a period a couple of weeks ago of getting tons of emails with worms attached. Annoying, but I have a really good virus detector so they were ultimately harmless. The deluge eventually faded out and I got a couple of weeks of peace. Only they're back, and now the email claimed to be from the FBI investigating me because my computer had been logged entering "illegal" sites.

I gotta wonder if this is an effective technique. Given how many family members forward me instructions not to sniff perfume in parking lots or flash my headlights at cars driving without lights in the dark, I expect it works for them pretty well. I also spent some micro-seconds trying to decide what might constitute an illegal website, but then I decided it must be referring to the links that [livejournal.com profile] mr_sharkey keeps sending me.

If well-read refers to books, what is the equivelent term used in reference to movies? Well-viewed? That doesn't sound right.

Obviously I'm not going to win Nanowrimo this year. I might hit the halfway point by midnight tomorrow. On the plus side, this is more than five times what I managed last year.

I think my mistake was doing the editing as I went along. Next year I'll write in November and post in December. I'm going to finish editing and posting the bits I've written so far, but I'm debating if I want to keep this project going into December, jsut to get it finished. (I haven't decided what point consitutes "finished" yet.)

Fuck - and I was going to go to bed about 5 hours ago. I was. I swear.

I fall down now.

First thought, any fortune thingy that tells me that my power animal is a butterfly is going to cause me to make that snorting noise through my nose.

Second thought, I am very pleased that tomorrow consists of a game where I will be running around pretending to be a 12-foot alien with four arms, because quite frankly after all this thinking-about-the-past stuff, I could use some good old-fashioned ass-busting time. And I'm getting too old for a proper bar brawl.

Third thought, in an effort to get more shit done around the house, [livejournal.com profile] the_axel and I actually agreed that neither of us will play video games when the other one is home. Hysterical. Place your bets now.

I have new people who have friended me. Hello new people. I am not normally this boring and loquacious, but this month I am writing a book. Normally I post a lot less often. I can't speak as to the standard levels of boring. I sense a rant coming up soon however, so you may be in luck if you like that kind of thing.

The longest part of this process isn't writing it, it's editing. Even though you aren't supposed to do that (according to Nanowrimo wisdom) if I'm going to let folk read it I damn well going to tidy it up so that at the very least makes some kind of sense. That's why my word count is higher than what's actually posted as of yet, I have to do housework on it first.

In non-writing news, this particular news-story struck me as proof that nothing is new under the sun. Not even fetish night posters.

I didn't get to do NaDrWriNi. Mostly because I was working. However I did edit today's entry while mildly tipsy on post-work tipple, so that's just gonna have to do.

Am seriously thinking of getting some sponsors and going to the Ace of Spades fundraiser on Wednesday - you raise money by being able to stay in a bar where Motorhead's Ace of Spades is being played non-stop. A non-Canadian I want to hang out with will be in town that night, and it's pretty much the only one I have off the entire time he's here, so we'll see if he's up for it.

So much trouble getting my ass in gear today. I don't know what the point is of setting my alarm to get up if I'm going to spend most of the extra time wandering around being foggy.

My resolution to provide something in these posts besides just the little ticker is being severely strained by the fact that I'm spending all my free time, well, writing. I had to force myself not to write today so that I could use the time to hit the job boards. Ha. I wasn't expecting to get into the process quite this much.

I'm working this weekend, so I expect I will have lots of time in the late evenings to get my word count up.

Maybe I'll even go have a beer some time this month. See people. That kinda thing.

One last Nanowrimo post, and then I'll shut up about it here.

I decided to go with a seperate LJ. Everything will be posted to [livejournal.com profile] crazy_boat. If you are currently on my braaaains filter, you should already see it pop up on your f-list. If not, let me know. LJ doesn't have a handy way of exporting filters yet so I had to do it all by hand, and since I'm working with a brain that has been mostly displaced by snot, there may be a few typos in there.

Anything potentially difficult will be f-locked. Anybody who was previously on my braaaains filter will be friended under the assumption that they are cool with reading the oogie bits. Anybody who friends me who was not previously on the braaaains filter will not automatically be friended back because I'm going to assume that they only want to read the non-oogie bits. If you break either of those rules, speak up and I'll change your status.

Entries will be open to comments if I want feedback, or locked if I don't. Obvious, but I'm posting it anyway. You can email me about comment-locked posts, but I may or may not respond if it's tough for me. I may or not build filters on this thing, depending on how it goes. I'm working on not being ashamed of my past, so I'm going to try and avoid using them, but we'll see.

I'm looking forward to this in much the same way that I looked forward to shedding my virginity. Anticipation, nervousness, performance anxiety, and a lot of "Crap, this is going to hurt, isn't it?"

We now return you to your regularily scheduled posts about amusing links, What Just Fell Off My House, and things in the media that piss me off.
the_siobhan: It means, "to rot" (Default)
So I've decided that I'm going to write about my childhood (and beyond, if I get that far) for Nanowrimo.

I'm trying to decide if I should create a new LJ just for the story, or if I should just post occasional excerpts here.

What do you think? What do other people do?

I'll definitely be locking the stuff that might be erm, somewhat critical of or embarrassing to people not here to defend themselves. So anybody who is currently on my braaaains filter who doesn't want to be subjected to that, let me know and I'll create a seperate filter for those.

(I suspect most of the triggering material will fall into the category of squirmy-unpleasant rather than violent. but I'm still remembering stuff, so I no promises.)

EDIT: Looking at the original formation of my braaaains filter makes me realize just how totally different the posts turned out to be from what I was expecting - so if anybody else wants to be taken on or off, let me know.

I appear to have signed up for Nanowrimo.

Given that I only managed to write just over 4000 words last year, it shouldn't be too difficult to beat my existing record.
